A very frustrating and sad day here at Chalky's.

The saying goes something like, "you never know what it is like until you walk in somebody else's footsteps."

I have never wanted to put a word verification system on my blog. Of course I still leave comments on other people's blogs who have it but it does take a while.

What is the need I thought.

Yesterday my blog was literally attacked in the most vicious and horrible way. My email inbox was pinging like a heart monitor and in the space of a few hours over 10,000 spam comments were piled onto my blog. I have so loved being able to email the lovely people who have left comments on my blog personally but now my inbox is absolutely jammed with all those spam comments. The " Sporty One " who is usually patient beyond belief will not be happy when he sees it. That is going to take me hours to delete and then afterwards empty the trash bin!!!!

I started last night and in my frustration it looks like I have managed to delete the wonderful comments left all through December instead of just the spam ones!

I have of course put on word verification now and hope this will stop anymore getting through.

I could cry !!!!

  2. It makes me sick the way the spam comes through, 10,000 though, that is really extreme. One of the reasons I stopped posting was that I had some advert for rude things put against comments on what was a really special post to me and I felt violated by it. I am so sorry you have had to tolerate such an onslaught. What on earth do these people expect to achieve by being so intrusive. I can filter my emails by sender and then select a check box to do a bulk delete - can you do that to save time? Lily. xxx

  3. Oh Linda I am so sad for you as I know how much you were enjoying emailing and replying to comments. I hope that you get it fixed. Try if you can to not let it get to you. Don't worry about the comments going, you know that we all said lovely things, and we know that you read and loved them. That is the important thing. I do word verification and I moderate all comments, I still get some things come through, but not much and I am not aware that any real commenter has been put off. Take care, I hope that today is a better day. xx

  5. Well, this is certainly a horrible thing to happen, but not to worry, we're all still here ;) I think Linda (Linda's Crafty Corner) had a solution to deleting spam messages in one bulk sweep when you asked for help before. I've not had to deal with this stuff yet so can't advise. Today will be a good day :) Wendy xox

  9. So sorry this happened to you Linda. Don't let it spoil your Christmas. And don't let it stop you from blogging! I have comment moderation on posts more than a week old. This may be an idea for you once you decide to turn off the verification, if the spam comments were going to older posts.

  11. What a lovely Christmas you are going to have. The house looks wonderful!! I would have been beside myself if that happened to me (with the spam) - what a time of year too! You will have such a special Christmas with your William - you must be the most wonderful grandmother. Love Kate (from greedy for colour) xx.

  12. Ohhhhhhhh....so sorry for the fuss you have had, Linda!!! I am loving being part of the blogging community and meeting you in the process, but I so understand the frustrations that crop up from time to time. The technical end of the process is challenging for me, and I am learning by trial and error. I am cheering you on and appreciate your posts! xx

  13. Oh no! How awful. I get about twenty spam comments a day; they are annoying but easily deleted. But 10,000! I quite understand why you would want to use word verification now. x

  15. Oh no!! I also loath the word verification and peoples blogs and usually cuss a little when I have to go thought the rigmarole, but I will think differently about it from now on. So sorry that this has happened to you. Xoxo

  17. oh how awful! was it someone with a blogger profile? I only allow comments from blogger profiles, although I'm aware that means some people can't comment. I need to have a think about this. it's nice to keep the commenting simple. Hope you managed to sort it out. Heather x
